Taboo Babysitting Questions Parents Are Too Embarrassed to Ask (But Deserve Honest Answers!)

Why We’re Answering These Taboo Babysitting Questions

Let’s be honest — hiring a babysitter can feel like stepping into a parenting gray zone. You want to do the right thing, but what even is the right thing? Most parents are too nervous to ask the “taboo” babysitting questions — the ones that feel awkward or overly personal.

Don’t worry. We’ve heard them all.

Below, we’re answering the most common babysitting questions parents feel weird asking... but absolutely should.

1) How do I determine what the standard babysitting rate is?

Rates vary based on your region, number of kids, and the sitter’s experience. In most cities, $17–$22/hour is typical for one child, with an additional $2–$4/hour per child. Use local Facebook groups or services like SmartSitter (in St. Louis, Jacksonville, & Atlanta!) to get a realistic idea of going rates in your area.

2) Should I feed my sitter a meal?

If your sitter is working over mealtime (especially dinner), — it’s a thoughtful and appreciated gesture. However, it isn't expected. You don’t need to cook for them, but offering something simple like pizza, leftovers, or letting them know they’re welcome to anything in the fridge goes a long way.

3) Should I tip my sitter?

Tipping isn’t required, but it’s a great way to show appreciation — especially if they stayed late, helped clean, or handled a tough bedtime. Even $5–$10 makes an impression. Many parents treat tipping like they would for great service at a restaurant.

4) Can I ask my sitter to do light chores?

You can — but only if expectations are set in advance. Sitters typically expect to clean up after themselves and the kids, but things like folding laundry or unloading the dishwasher should be discussed beforehand and may warrant higher pay

5) Is it rude to check in while I’m out?

Not at all — a quick text is perfectly fine! Just try to keep it short and sweet (“How are things going?” or “Did she go down okay?”). Over-texting can be distracting, especially if they’re handling a busy evening.

6) Do sitters expect access to my WiFi or TV?

Most sitters bring their own entertainment for when kids are asleep, and yes — they’ll likely hope for WiFi access. It’s perfectly fine to share your network password, and if there are TV rules or shows off-limits, just let them know upfront.

7) What if my child gets upset when I leave?

Totally normal. Give your child a loving, confident goodbye, then go. Lingering or sneaking out can make things worse. Your sitter likely has experience with separation anxiety and can manage those first few tricky moments.

8) Can I have cameras running while the sitter is there?

You can — but it’s respectful to tell them. Hidden cameras can damage trust. Instead, be transparent and say, “Just a heads up, we have cameras in the living room and kitchen.”

9) How far in advance should I book a sitter?

Ideally, 5–7 days in advance for weekends or evenings. Holidays, school breaks, or last-minute needs? The earlier, the better. That said, services like SmartSitter (in St. Louis, Jacksonville, & Atlanta!) can help with short-notice requests if needed.

10) What do I do if I don’t like the sitter?

Trust your gut — but handle it kindly. Let your agency or platform know, or politely say, “Thanks so much, but we’re going a different direction next time.” No need to force a fit that doesn’t feel right.
